Shop! Environments Association presented OMA awards for Display of the Year and announced the winners for the Budget and Creative awards during last night’s Shop! Awards ceremony at GlobalShop@RetailX. All Gold winners also were recognized. A total of 180 winning displays received Gold, Silver or Bronze awards in the 61-year-old competition.

This year’s OMA Awards competition consisted of 23 categories, each with three subcategories. Awardwinning displays received the highest scores in design, innovation, and the proven ability to lift sales during the online judging in May and live on-site judging on Monday, June 24.

Judges awarded 41 Gold awards this year, noting several prevalent trends such as backlighting and indirect lighting, the use of resin figures, and materials traditionally found in permanent displays showing up in temporary displays.

“The OMA Award winners truly demonstrate how to ‘put the wow in retail,’ one of six trends identified by the association as having a major impact on the future of retail,” said Shop! Executive Director Todd Dittman. “For more than 60 years, we have been recognizing the industry’s top in-store marketing, promotions and POP displays during the annual celebration at GlobalShop. It is always exciting to see the creativity and talent our members bring to this competition. Congratulations to all winners.”

Display of the Year

The prestigious Display of the Year award is presented within three divisions–temporary, semipermanent, and permanent—based upon length of time in the store. Only Gold OMA winners qualify for the consideration of winning the Display of the Year. The 2019 Display of the Year winner within each of the three divisions is:

Semi-Permanent: Rapid Displays for Tecate Pouring Can created for Heineken USA
Permanent: Ryan Scott Inc. for Kingsdown BedMatch Experience created for Kingsdown Inc

The Creative Award

The Creative Award celebrates the creativity of merchandising design and execution separately from sales results, and engages the creative community through acknowledging excellence based solely on ideation, imagination, and forward thinking. This award is presented across three divisions based upon length of time in the store: temporary, semi-permanent, and permanent. The 2019 Creative Award winners are:

Temporary: Bish Creative Display and Madden Communications for Cazadores Catrina Day of the Dead Pole Topper created for Madden Communications
Semi-Permanent: Bish Creative Display for Veuve Clicquot Romantic Picnic Basket Display created for Moet Hennessy USA
Permanent: Merchandising & Marketing Corp. for the Belvedere Digi created for Belvedere Vodka

The Budget Award

An award that recognizes entries that had the greatest impact, while being conscious of a strict budget. To be eligible for the Best Use of Budget Award, entries had to achieve Gold, Silver or Bronze in their division. In the Temporary Division the entry must cost under $25, for Semi-Permanent under $50, and for Permanent under $100. The 2019 Budget Award winners are:

OMA Awards Judging

Entries are judged in a two-round process by teams of in-store marketing professionals representing brands, retailers, ad agencies, and producers/suppliers. Each round focuses on design, innovation, and the proven ability to lift sales. The first round is completed online by reviewing case history responses and evaluating entry responses to questions focusing on design, engineering, shopper engagement, retail experience, brand performance, and sales results. The second round is completed on the OMA Show floor during GlobalShop@RetailX to validate their online scores.
