Cervecería y Maltería Quilmes: A Leader in Retail, Sustainability, and Social Commitment. Interview with Vanesa Vázquez, Sustainability Manager
WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK of a global sustainability strategy, Cervecería Quilmes stands out as a pioneer in implementing practices that not only promote environmental care but also strengthen social inclusion and community development. We spoke with Vanesa Vázquez, the company’s Sustainability Manager, who provided a detailed overview of their plans and actions.
History and Commitment of Cervecería y Maltería Quilmes
With 134 years of history in Argentina, Cervecería Quilmes has been a constant presence in the lives of Argentines, not only through its products but also through its close relationship with communities. This commitment is reflected in its purpose of “driving the progress of people and the planet,” a philosophy that guides all its actions and strategies.
Sustainability Strategy
Since 2016, the company has adopted ambitious environmental goals that cover everything from agricultural production to the end consumer. Vanesa explained: “One of the fundamental pillars of this strategy is sustainable agriculture. We work with 1,200 barley, corn, and hop producers to implement good agronomic practices that ensure regenerative and sustainable agriculture. This approach not only mitigates the effects of climate change but also improves soil productivity and health, ensuring a sustainable source of raw materials.”
Innovation in Energy and Emission Reduction
In 2018, Cervecería Quilmes committed to using 100% renewable electric energy and reducing its carbon emissions by 25%. This commitment materialized through a purchase agreement with Central Puerto, which allowed for the construction of a wind farm in Córdoba with 21 turbines. Vanesa highlighted: “As a result, we have achieved a 40% reduction in our total CO2 emissions, establishing ourselves as a leading company in the use of renewable energies in the brewing industry.”
Circular Packaging and Returnability
The approach to packaging also reflects their commitment to the circular economy. “Our goal is for 100% of our packaging to be returnable and contain up to 50% recycled material. Returnable containers are reused up to 29 times, significantly reducing the use of natural resources, water, and energy,” Vanesa explained. Additionally, she mentioned that once this cycle is completed, glass bottles are 100% recycled, thus promoting a sustainable product lifecycle.
Logistics Innovations and Point-of-Sale Technology
Logistics is another key aspect of Cervecería y Maltería Quilmes’ sustainability strategy. The company has implemented technologies in its transportation to minimize environmental impact, such as the use of electric trucks in the last mile of distribution in Buenos Aires. “Efficient route planning and the use of always-full trucks contribute to reducing CO2 emissions,” added Vanesa.
Water Management
Efficient water management is a priority for the company, especially in areas with water risk like Mendoza. Here, the company co-founded the Río Mendoza Water Fund, which aims to improve water quality and availability through biodiversity restoration. Internally, they have implemented technologies for reusing treated effluent water for various applications, thereby reducing total water consumption in their operations.
Social Impact and Community Programs
Cervecería y Maltería Quilmes also stands out for its social inclusion programs. A notable example is Gauchada barley, a product derived from regenerative agriculture. For every package sold, the company donates barley to community centers, supporting both nutrition and entrepreneurship training for neighbors. “This program not only improves nutrition but also provides tools for the economic development of communities,” commented Vanesa.
Responsible Consumption and Non-Alcoholic Options
Promoting responsible consumption is another pillar of Cervecería Quilmes’ strategy. Since 2018, all their products carry logos indicating that alcoholic beverages should only be consumed by people over 18 and not by pregnant women. Additionally, they offer a portfolio of low-alcohol and non-alcoholic beers, such as Corona Cero and Quilmes Cero Cero, providing responsible alternatives for consumers.
Strategic Partnership
Currently, Cervecería y Maltería Quilmes is part of Anheuser-Busch InBev, one of the largest brewing conglomerates in the world. This strategic partnership has allowed Cervecería y Maltería Quilmes to access cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices that reinforce its commitment to sustainability and social development (Forbes Argentina) (The Brand Soup).
Global Inspiration and Leadership
Cervecería y Maltería Quilmes’ commitment to sustainability and social inclusion serves as an inspiration for other companies in the sector. Publications like this aim to highlight these efforts and promote good practices in the global market. Transparency and collaboration are essential to amplify the impact of these initiatives, positioning the company as a benchmark in creating shared value for the progress of people and the planet.
Conclusion
As Cervecería Quilmes moves towards its carbon neutrality goals for 2040, its comprehensive sustainability approach, from agriculture to the point of sale, sets a high standard in the brewing industry. With each innovation and program, it not only reinforces its legacy in Argentina but also demonstrates how a company can be a positive change agent on a global scale.
Vanesa concludes: “We are committed to continuing this path of constant improvement, always seeking new ways to reduce our environmental impact and contribute positively to the communities where we operate. Every small step counts, and together we can achieve great changes.”
