REI Plans 6 New Stores Next Year
Co-op outdoor retailer also makes opening announcement for ’26

Specialty outdoor retailer REI Co-op (Kent, Wash.) has unveiled its lineup of 2025 store openings, including three in California. In addition to new locales in Carlsbad, Chico and Elk Grove in California, the company detailed its plans next year for an expansion into Amherst, N.Y.; Durango, Colo.; and Lynnwood, Wash.
The company also disclosed plans for a new store in Prosper, Texas, in 2026, which joins a previously announced St. George, Utah, store for that year. Additional stores for 2026 will be announced as leases are finalized.
“Our store employees are the heart of the co-op, and they welcome everyone to experience our product expertise, resources and inspiration in support of an active lifestyle,” said VP of Stores Mary-Farrell Tarbox. “Cities that will have new stores represent communities that serve as a gateway to some of the country’s most incredible natural places and where our members currently live or destinations where they love to play outside.”
Each new REI store will offer apparel and gear for camping, hiking, cycling, run and fitness, climbing and more. In addition, all stores will feature a full-service bike shop. The stores in Amherst, Durango and Lynnwood will also operate seasonal ski and snowboard shops, and the one in St. George will offer Nordic ski hand-tuning and snowboard mounting.
By the end of this year, the co-op will have opened 10 new stores and expanded its existing San Diego location, giving it about 190 locales. With 24 million members, REI is the largest consumer co-op in the U.S., and one of the largest such businesses overall.
