Walmart Closing 4 Stores, Including 2 Pick-Up-Only Prototypes

Walmart (Bentonville, Ark.) plans to shutter three stores in suburban Chicago, including one of its first pickup- and delivery-only locations in the country, the Chicago Tribune reports. In addition, the newspaper said a second such prototype is being closed in the retailer’s hometown in Arkansas.

The soon-to-close location in Lincolnwood, Ill., was an early prototype for the pickup-only model when it opened in 2019. Walmart also plans to close Superstores in Plainfield, Ill., and Homewood, Ill., on March 10.

Walmart spokesperson Felicia McCranie told the Tribune that the decision to close the three suburban Chicago stores came after a “thorough review process” found the stores hadn’t performed as well as hoped. The retailer has a location in Skokie about a mile from the Lincolnwood location and six Walmart Supercenters within 10 miles.

Overall, Walmart has nearly 5000 stores across the U.S., including about 180 Walmart and Sam’s Club locations in Illinois.
