Macy’s Ramps Up RFID Use to Combat Crime

Macy’s (New York) is ratcheting up its use of RFID chips amid a spike of high-profile retail thefts, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Macy’s began using RFID in 2013. Though it’s not a new technology, and though RFID chips might not have prevented recent flash mob-style thefts at Nordstrom and Best Buy, they can provide retailers with real-time information on where and when items are stolen, said Joe Coll, Macy’s VP of Asset Protection, Operations and Strategy.

Coll told the Journal that data is collected when the chip, which is tagged to the merchandise, passes through “smart exits” equipped with sensors. Macy’s can then access relevant security footage to identify the criminals who took merchandise.
