Swedish Home Furnisher Plans Pop-Up Store

IKEA U.S. (Conshohocken, Pa.) will open a pop-up store on Aug. 27 in Auburn Hills, Mich. Housed at the Great Lakes Crossing Outlets, the retailer describes the 4500-square-foot shop in a news release as “a new customer meeting point that brings the IKEA experience closer to customers throughout the Metro Detroit area.”

The 4500-square-foot IKEA Auburn Hills pop-up store will offer more than 500 IKEA products (including the brand’s frozen Swedish meatball to take home). The chain’s traditional outlets, by contrast, are massive affairs, typically covering 300,000 square feet of space and offering up to 10,000 SKUs of goods.

“We are excited to welcome customers to our second location in the Metro Detroit area [the other is in nearby Canton, Mich.] as we continue making the IKEA experience more accessible to the many people across Michigan,” said Heather Spatz, Market Manager, IKEA Canton. “The IKEA Auburn Hills Pop-up store reflects our ongoing commitment to the region and our ambition to bring affordable, well-designed home furnishings closer to customers, whether they live in Auburn Hills or are visiting this vibrant destination.”

IKEA did not say how long the pop-up store will be open. The retailer also said the smaller store is one of many new format stores IKEA U.S. is adopting to increase the brand’s accessibility to consumers and ensure there are more ways to meet customers where they are and how they like to shop, including several of what it calls Plan and Order Point with Pick-up locales.

Overall, the company operates 375 IKEA stores in 30 countries, including 61 in the U.S.
