Which cities around the world have retail hubs most worth traveling to?
Seeking to answer that question is Travel and Tour World magazine, which just released its “Top 50 Shopping Destinations in the World for 2026.” That editorial ranking “was developed through extensive research and comparative analysis, spotlighting destinations where shopping goes beyond retail to become a compelling part of the travel experience,” the media platform noted in its news release on the roster.
Based on those criteria, holding the top 10 slots (in descending order) are: London, Milan, New York, Shanghai, Paris, Tokyo, Zurich, Sydney, Seoul and Vienna.
“From flagship boutiques and global fashion districts to independent designers, artisan quarters and heritage markets, these destinations showcase the diversity and character shaping shopping tourism in 2026,” the report notes.
Below are capsule summaries on why the cities mentioned above were selected to sit atop the roster:
- London blends luxury, heritage and creativity, from Bond Street and Savile Row to Camden and Portobello markets. Travelers can shop British fashion, jewelry, antiques, books, premium tea and artisan finds across iconic retail districts.
- Milan pairs high fashion with Italian craftsmanship, led by Via Montenapoleone and the Quadrilatero della Moda. Travelers can discover designer labels, leather goods, jewelry, footwear and elegant local boutiques shaped by the city’s design heritage.
- New York delivers unmatched retail variety, from Fifth Avenue flagships and SoHo boutiques to vintage stores and neighborhood markets. Shoppers can find global fashion, streetwear, books, beauty, electronics, jewelry and distinctive local brands.
- Shanghai combines futuristic retail with traditional Chinese shopping culture, centered around Nanjing Road, Huaihai Road and major luxury malls. Visitors can explore designer fashion, silk, tea, jewelry, technology, beauty products and contemporary Chinese labels.
- Paris converts shopping into a celebration of style, craftsmanship and heritage, from Avenue Montaigne and Rue Saint-Honoré to elegant department stores and flea markets. Expect couture, perfume, jewelry, leather goods, antiques and artisanal French specialties.
- Tokyo turns shopping into discovery, from Ginza’s luxury flagships to Harajuku’s street fashion and Akihabara’s electronics. Travelers can explore Japanese beauty, technology, stationery, crafts, anime collectables and distinctive designer creations.
- Zurich brings refined Swiss shopping to elegant Bahnhofstrasse, characterful old-town boutiques and specialist stores. Visitors can seek Swiss watches, fine jewelry, chocolate, design pieces, premium fashion and beautifully crafted local products.
- Sydney mixes harbor-city style with fashion, design and relaxed Australian creativity across Pitt Street, Queen Victoria Building and vibrant neighborhood precincts. Shoppers can discover local labels, opals, beauty products, surfwear and Aboriginal-inspired crafts.
- Seoul pulses with trend-driven shopping, from Myeongdong and Gangnam to Hongdae’s youthful boutiques and bustling markets. Visitors come for K-beauty, Korean fashion, accessories, electronics, lifestyle goods and innovative products shaping global trends.
- Vienna makes shopping feel distinctly elegant, blending Kärntner Strasse and the Goldenes Quartier with historic stores and traditional markets. Travelers can find Austrian jewelry, porcelain, confectionery, fashion, antiques and finely made cultural keepsakes.
“Shopping has transcended its once utilitarian purpose to become an increasingly consequential dimension of the contemporary travel experience—an avenue through which visitors encounter, interpret and participate in the culture, creativity, craftsmanship and quotidian character of a destination,” said Anup Kumar Keshan, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Travel and Tour World.
