Who Knew? Bamboo Clothing Market Expected to Hit $3 Billion by 2032

The global bamboo clothing market is expected to more than double during the coming decade, driven by factors such as the growing desire for sustainable fashion brands among consumers, more and better environmentally friendly materials and manufacturers achieving economies of scale.

That prediction on the market’s size and growth potential are included in a recent report by Allied Market Research (Portland, Ore.). According to that analysis, the global bamboo clothing industry generated  $1.3 billion in 2022, and is anticipated to generate $3 billion by 2032, which translates into an annual growth rate of 9.1 percent for the period.

Bamboo clothing is “semi-synthetic viscose cellulose extracted from bamboo or yarn made from bamboo fiber,” says the garment-production website Sewport.com. Such material is breathable, stretchable and wicks moisture, the site says.

“Fabrics have been made from bamboo for thousands of years, but it is only in contemporary times that the process of making this hardy and fast-growing wood into fabric has been perfected,” says Sewport. “The story of bamboo fabric is a mixed bag. While some types of this fabric are environmentally sustainable and produced ethically, other types may be harmful to the environment or the workers who make it. To ensure that you select the right type of bamboo fabric, it’s important to learn more about the textile industry surrounding this plant.”

That said, the market clearly has potential. “The rapid growth of the online retail sector and pressure on reducing carbon footprint are expected to offer remunerative opportunities for the expansion of the bamboo clothing market during the forecast period,” the report says.
