Fourth of July 2024 by the Numbers

The Fourth of July falls on a Thursday this year, which means some will use it to kick off a four-day weekend, while others will just have a single day off.

As for spending patterns for the holiday, the National Retail Federation offers up these stats:

  • Individual consumers are expected spend an average of $90.42 on food items, down from $93.34 a year earlier.
  • Total overall spending is projected to hit $9.4 billion, down slightly from $9.5 billion a year ago.
  • The two most-popular activities are unchanged: cookouts/barbecues/picnics, 65%; and fireworks/community celebrations, 44%.
  • Overall, 87% of consumers plan to celebrate the Fourth of July in 2024, unchanged from last year.

NRF has been conducting its annual Independence Day spending survey with Prosper Insights & Analytics since 2003. This year’s survey was fielded to 8952 consumers and was conducted June 3-June 9, with a margin of error of +/- 1.1%.
