General Store with Movie Cameo Hits the Market

Remember the general store in the movie “Baby Boom”? OK, it might not be as famous as the deli in “When Harry Met Sally” or the diner in “Diner,” but it still had its moment in the spotlight – serving as the setting for memorable scene in which a tourist tells Diane Keaton’s character that “the whole state is cute.”

And now, after undergoing a series of renovations/updates by two sets of owners during the past decade or so, the nearly 200-year-old landmark in Peru, Vt., is on the market.

Asking price for the property, formally known as the JJ Hapgood General Store & Eatery: $2.25 million.

What would you get for that money? “The property’s modern renaissance began in 2013, when a local resident completed a redevelopment of the historic building, while preserving its authentic Vermont character,” the news release announcing the sale notes. “The result is a beautifully restored property showcasing exceptional craftsmanship, including Danby marble walkways and architectural accents, custom cabinetry, handcrafted benches, and premium finishes throughout.

“In 2023, entrepreneurs Leslie and Michael French, together with their daughters, Gramercy and Bowie, from New York, acquired the business with a vision of creating a vibrant gathering place for both locals and visitors. After temporarily closing to fully renovate, rebrand and refine operations, the family reopened JJ Hapgood with expanded breakfast, lunch and dinner service, successfully reestablishing it as the social and culinary hub of the community.”

As of this posting, the property was still for sale. Click here for more information.
