IN JULY, FOOTWEAR AND apparel retailer Onitsuka Tiger (Kobe, Japan; a brand owned by Asics) opened its largest global flagship in Tokyo’s Shinjuku ward. Less than a month later, it opened its second-largest flagship in Nagoya, Japan.
Its Shinjuku flagship features a “vertical narrative” concept, blending materials, colors and cultural aesthetics of Japan and Italy. Spanning four floors and 19773 square feet, the interior features stark architectural lines, rich material textures and pays homage to Japanese craftsmanship and modern Italian design.
The flagship in Nagoya, opened in August and spanning two floors, was inspired by the city’s legacy as an industrial hub. The first floor features terrazzo and steel, while light boxes, reminiscent of traditional Japanese “andon” lanterns, are suspended above. The second floor features Rosso Lepanto marble used as both a sculptural decoration and product displays.
