Primark Saddles Up for Texas
Clothing retailer to open stores in McAllen, El Paso
Clothing retailer Primark (Dublin) has unveiled plans to expand to Texas – a new state for the brand – starting in McAllen and El Paso. The retailer has signed leases for the new locales but did not disclose their opening dates. Last month, Primark announced that its last two U.S. store openings for this year would be in Lake Grove, N.Y., and Concord Mills in Charlotte, N.C.
Each store will have more than 37,000 square feet, bringing what the retailer calls “Primania” to shoppers at McAllen’s La Plaza Mall and El Paso’s Cielo Vista Mall.
“As we work towards our goal of opening 60 stores in the U.S. by 2026, the southern U.S. shows great promise for Primark,” said Primark U.S. President Kevin Tulip. “Recognizing the potential in this new market, we couldn’t be more excited to announce our plans for La Plaza and Cielo Vista Mall shoppers. Our offerings continue to resonate strongly with U.S. customers, and this expansion will bring the affordable fashion, beauty, and accessories that families love to a completely new region.”
The retailer says in addition to serving the McAllen and El Paso communities, the new stores will also attract customers from New Mexico and Mexico. Primark will soon open a new distribution center in Jacksonville, Fla, to support its growth across southern states such as Texas.
Founded in Ireland in 1969 under the Penneys brand, Primark now has more than 400 stores globally with the aim of reaching 530 stores by the end of 2026. By the end of 2023, the retailer will have 24 stores across the U.S., with plans to expand to over 60 locations by 2026.
