Retail Gone Rogue: Retail as Social Hospitality
“CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE,” OR CX, has been on the lips of every store designer and marketing professional for about a decade now. Most in our industry define good CX as providing great service in a memorable atmosphere. This is true, however, it’s no longer enough.
Today, CX also includes well-branded, easy-to-navigate digital platforms, attention-grabbing storefronts and emotionally engaging interactive interiors. But even that doesn’t fully capture it. Retail is now about social hospitality, where retailers serve drinks, offer food and, on occasion, provide entertainment. It’s about creating an environment that oh, by-the-way, sells products.
Retail. Has. Gone. Rogue.
And how fun is that? I’ve been saying for years that retail needs to stand on its head to stay relevant. And today, the brave and bold are doing it in a big way.
Starting with Storefronts
Excessive foliage, decorative props that appear to pierce the facade, backdrops for photo ops, commissioned artwork, signature scents, curated music, and inviting seating areas, all contribute to the, “hey-made-you-look” experience.
Interiors
Retailers are learning that less product often equals more sales. Fixtures are being removed to create room for a grand piano, stage, lounge, bar, runway, or flexible event space. Furniture is now easy to relocate, lighting (color, brightness) is programmable, music adjustable, and walls quickly changed, all via remote programming.
Seasonal Surprises
Stores are reinventing themselves seasonally, to keep customers returning for the latest look/style, the newest experience, and the latest offerings. Decor is no longer tired (faux) spring/summer florals, fall cornucopias and holiday trees – it’s about fresh, unique and brand-forward decorative elements that are photo-worthy.
AdvertisementImmersion in the Details
Staff no longer stand around saying, “how can I help you today?” They engage, inform and entertain.
Dressing rooms and restrooms are thoughtfully designed and beautiful. Transaction counters are nimble and changed as needed. Shopping bags and gift wrapping are worth saving.
To summarize, retail CX isn’t static – it’s constantly evolving. It thrives on reinvention and delivers a sense of social hospitality that keeps customers engaged. This approach ensures sustained attention, fuels repeat visits, encourages social sharing, and increases the perceived value of products and services.
