Inditex (A Coruna, Spain), operator of Zara and six other fashion brands, has reduced its overall store fleet by 136 over the past year, bringing its total number of stores to 5562. (See the end of this story for a brand-by-brand breakdown of the closings – and the one flag that did grow, albeit just by two units.) The retailer disclosed those numbers in its financial report for the first quarter of 2025, during it which it posted increases in both net sales and gross profit as compared with the year-ago period.
Looking ahead, the retailer said it did expect to expect its physical footprint in the coming year, though it didn’t specify the number of stores it plans to open. Instead, the retailer said it plans a growth of annual gross space for 2025-2026 that’s “expected to be around 5%, accompanied by positive net space contribution and strong online sales.”
The retailer also noted that It has been 50 years since Zara opened its first store in A Coruña Juan Flórez, in northwest Spain. That space has operated continuously since then and was recently refurbished, as were its locales in Seoul Noon Square in South Korea, Torina Via Roma in Italy and The Grove in Los Angeles in America.
“The rest of the concepts continue to launch or refurbish in important locations, for example, Massimo Dutti and Pull&Bear in London Oxford Street, Oysho in Paris Madeleine and Zara Home in San Sebastian,” the company’s statement noted.
