In addition, according to its website, the off-price unit is in the midst of a pre-holiday opening blitz, with 16 new stores slated to between Oct. 22 and Nov. 5. (The parent company has not opened a new department store since the debut of its New York flagship in 2019.)
In its coverage of the news about the Rack’s return to San Francisco, SF Gate reported that the building it will occupy most recently housed an It’Sugar tourist-focused candy emporium that closed in 2024; the building is perhaps best known as the one-time home of a Virgin Megastore, which closed in 2009 after nearly 15 years at that spot.
The new Rack location will mark a major return for both that discount chain and the Nordy name to central San Francisco. The parent brand closed both its flagship Bay Area store at the now-shuttered Westfield San Francisco Centre and the Rack location across the street in 2023.
