The Work Behind the Work: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Shop! Ideation Retail Challenge 2025/2026

THERE IS A MOMENT, JUST AFTER the announcement of the winning concept is made, when everything feels suspended.
The 6-hour Retail Design Challenge sprint has concluded. A concept that was sketched, debated, shaped at speed, and presented to peers is suddenly “the winning concept.” There is celebration, relief, disbelief, and pride all happening at once.

Yet that announcement doesn’t signal an ending. It signals a transition. The sprint rewards possibility. What follows requires collaboration, discipline, and execution.
The SHOP! Ideation Retail Challenge has always carried a unique kind of energy. It compresses time, amplifies creativity, and forces teams to think not in weeks or months, but in hours. Unlike traditional project teams, participants are not hand selected colleagues or agency partners. Teams are formed from registered attendees representing varied disciplines, backgrounds, companies, and perspectives, creating an environment where fresh thinking, unexpected collaboration, and new relationships emerge around a shared challenge.
The Retail Challenge reinforces a simple but powerful belief: we are better together. The strongest ideas emerge when diverse talents and perspectives come together, respectfully challenge one another, build on different viewpoints, and collectively create experiences that none of us could have imagined alone.
AdvertisementThis past 2025/2026 season was no exception. During Shop! Ideation in Providence this past October, teams were asked to respond to a brief for SNIPES, a brand that exists at the intersection of street culture, sport, fashion, and youth identity. The goal was to reimagine a modular in-store environment that would elevate product launches, collaborations, storytelling, and community engagement. More than a display space, the concept needed to become an immersive platform that connected consumers to the brand through experience.

Out of that sprint emerged the winning concept from the Drop Squad team led by co-coaches Maximus Coric of Vizex and Johan Kiszonak of ZenGenius. That moment marked the end of the competition phase, but it also marked the beginning of something far more complex: translating an idea into a built environment at Shop! MarketPlace 2026 in New Orleans.
Once the celebration subsides, the reality of execution sets in. A concept born in six hours must be examined through the lens of fabrication, engineering, logistics, installation, materiality, and timing. The clarity of the original idea becomes both its strength and its vulnerability as it is translated into physical space.
And this is where the Retail Challenge reveals what makes our industry unique. While the sprint may identify a winning concept, it is the willingness of industry colleagues and their companies to step forward, share their expertise, invest their resources, and contribute their time that ultimately brings the idea to life.

Without this collective effort, the concept never moves beyond intent. With it, the idea becomes reality.
This year was no exception. We extend our sincere thanks to OPTO, DFab, Universal Custom Display, Principal Industries, Crimson AV, BB Creative Consultancy, Vizex, EWI, ZenGenius, Siffron, Kingsmen, GFloor, Precision Facility Group, LLC, Retail Elements, MBH Architects, and Sloan LED, whose partnership, craftsmanship, and commitment helped transform the winning concept from intention into reality.
“The Universal Custom Display (UCD) team was honored and proud to have partaken in the engineering and fabrication that brought the SNIPES experience to life at Shop! MarketPlace. Working alongside the Drop Squad team demonstrated the power of true collaboration; different individuals, shared industry expertise, one vision, and a lot of ingenuity and creativity in bringing to life something special together. Taking a “Design” and making it a “Reality” is a tricky proposition. The Drop Squad really brought it when it came to the different aspects required to turn the “dream” into a real and functional showpiece.” – Dan Hayes, President/CEO, Universal Custom Display
By the time the SNIPES concept stood complete on the floor of Shop! MarketPlace, it represented far more than the outcome of a winning sprint. It stood as a reminder of what our industry does best: coming together to transform ideas into experiences through shared commitment, craftsmanship, and execution.

Looking ahead, the next chapter of the Retail Challenge is already taking shape with brand partner Boll & Branch. On October 6, 2026, the challenge kicks off in Las Vegas, bringing our industry together once again to imagine, create, build, and celebrate what is possible when we unite around a shared idea.
