Birkenstock (Linz am Rhein, Germany) has opened a store in Paris, its first in France. The two-story, 1400-square-foot space, in the city’s Marais district, features gypsum walls that serve as a reminder that the city was built over ancient quarries of that rock, along with leather and cork elements, which are central to the brand’s footbed.

The basement of the space is equipped as an “experience area,” featuring a large light box showcasing the latest campaigns. The lower level can also be used for community events.

“This store will help us to connect more personally with consumers,” said Nico Bouyakhf, President and Managing Director, Birkenstock Europe. “There are many key cities where we are not present in Europe, and we are excited to start our retail expansion in a more meaningful way with an iconic city like Paris and in a renowned location like the Marais, bringing rich storytelling and experience around the footbed in a unique environment that reflects an authentic Parisian flavor.”

The company said the opening of the Paris store is its first in the region in 4 years. Though the brand says it plans to open stores in other major European cities over the next few years, it did not provide any specifics.

Overall, the footwear brand operates about 45 stores, almost half of which are in Germany. In the U.S., its stores can be found in New York, Los Angeles and other major markets.
