Walmart (Bentonville, Ark,) has taken the wraps off its first-ever Walmart-branded store in Africa. The discount chain, which first revealed plans for such stores earlier this year but provided no specifics at that time, has opened a Walmart in the Clearwater Mall, which is in the Roodepoort community northwest of Johannesburg, South Africa.
Previously, the retailer operated in Africa under the Massmart banner, which Walmart took full ownership of in 2022 after a decade of operating as its majority owner with a 51 percent stake. Massmart has 285 stores operating under several brands, including Makro and Jumbo.
The retailer says it plans more Walmarts on the continent, but did not provide any specifics.
“Opening this first Walmart store in South Africa is about much more than a business milestone; it is a commitment to helping customers save money and live better by consistently delivering the lowest total cost for the basket of products they need,” says Andrea Albright, EVP and Chief Growth Officer for Walmart International and Operating Partner, Massmart, in a news release. “We’re delivering quality without requiring customers to wait for short-term promotions or worry about fluctuating prices.”
The retailer says the Johannesburg store is designed to offer an affordable, one-stop convenience shopping experience, offering fresh and frozen food and groceries alongside a range of family, home and entertainment items including apparel and baby, small appliances, toys and electronics. The store will also support 15 area suppliers that were identified at the Walmart Supplier Growth Summit held earlier this year in Johannesburg.
