Dollar General Corp. (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) continues to expand at breakneck speed, with plans to add 575 stores this year. The brand, which calls itself “America’s neighborhood general store,” unveiled that number in the news release on its strong first quarter fiscal results for the period ended May 2. (For that period, its net sales increased 5.3%, to $10.4 billion, and its operating profit rose 5.5%, to $576.1 million.)

During this fiscal year,  the discounter says it plans 575 new stores in the U.S. and up to 15 new stores in Mexico, along with remodeling roughly 4250 stores and relocating 45 others. In the first quarter alone, it opened 156 new stores, remodeled about 1200 stores and relocated 23 stores.

While the retailer’s first quarter results exceeded its internal expectations, “uncertainty exists for the remainder of the year regarding the potential impact of tariffs on the business, and particularly on consumer behavior,” the news release said. Despite that uncertainty, Dollar General increased its expected net sales growth, same-store sales and diluted earnings per share.

“Looking ahead, we are uniquely well-positioned to serve our customer in a variety of economic environments,” said CEO Todd Vasos.

Overall, the company has 20,600-plus Dollar General, DG Market, DGX and pOpshelf stores across the United States and Mi Súper Dollar General stores in Mexico.
