IN NEW YORK, this spring is bringing more than just the blooming flowers – the city’s retail landscape is having a major overhaul. From international brands to tech giants, new flagships are opening within weeks of each other in the city’s most iconic retail centers.
Ever-expanding Irish retailer Primark (Dublin) is opening its 40th store in the U.S. in historic fashion: on Herald Square in New York. The 54,000-square-foot flagship is set to open May 8 with a “block party” hosted by the retailer to celebrate, featuring live music and giveaways for guests. “This is a landmark moment for Primark in the United States as we open our incredible new flagship at the epicenter of American fashion,” Kevin Tulip, President of Primark US, said in a press release.
Also on May 8, Japanese fashion label Issey Miyake (Tokyo) will open its two-floor, 13,000-square-foot flagship on the ground floor of the New York Life Building on the corner of Madison Avenue and 26th Street. The building’s historic architecture is intentionally exposed and showcased alongside new stainless steel fixtures. At the center of the store is a staircase of structural glass taking guests up to the second floor while large windows provide views of Madison Square Park.
Japanese outdoor and sports apparel retailer Goldwin (Tokyo) opened its latest international flagship on Lafayette Street in Soho. The 1,815-square-foot store is a part of the retailer’s recent and rapid international expansion following store openings in London in January and Seoul in February.

The flagship includes immersive digital elements such as a street-facing screen to showcase the latest merchandise and marketing campaigns. AdvertisementTech titan Meta (Menlo Park, Calif.) announced the flagship of its Meta Lab on Fifth Avenue in March. The space began as a temporary pop-up in November and is now a permanent flagship for the company to showcase its tech wearables. “Placing our flagship store alongside the brands that help define culture will distinguish Meta Lab from traditional consumer electronics retail,” Matt Jacobson, VP and Creative Director, Wearables, Meta, said in a company press release. “There’s no better home than NYC to innovate, and we’ll continue to celebrate the community while making our products easy to see, try and understand.”
